Capurro team over the years

1876 - 1910

Foundations

A.M. Capurro & Sons Ltd is founded in 1876 by Arturo Maria Capurro, initially supplying coal to Gibraltar’s busy port.

Soon after, the business expands into shipping and insurance, the latter continues today as Capurro Insurance.

During WWI (1914–1918), the company supplies British Forces across various fronts with essential commodities.

1920s–1930s

Automotive Beginnings

Capurro enters the automotive sector in 1925 as Gibraltar’s Ford distributor, also becoming the first Goodyear tyre distributor outside the US and UK.

By 1931, the company shifts focus to Austin Motor Co. Ltd, expanding into Spain, US military bases, and Morocco.

1940s–1950s

Expansion & Diversification

In the 1940s, Capurro becomes Gibraltar’s representative for American Express, RAC, and travel services.

Land Rover is launched in 1948 by longtime partner Rover Group, becoming a major brand in the decades to come.

Subsidiary Gedime Motors Ltd. is created in 1951 to represent Mercedes-Benz (still ongoing), later expanding to include Mitsubishi and Smart.

The main facility at 20 Line Wall Road is acquired and expanded in 1954.

1960s–1980s

Adaptation & Resilience

In 1968, following the formation of British Leyland, Capurro adds Triumph, Jaguar, MG, and Rover to its portfolio.

The Spanish border closure (1968–1983) brings major disruption, leading the company to diversify into electronics, home goods, and paint.

Despite the challenges, Capurro maintains its automotive focus, representing Rover, Land Rover, Mini, and MG under Austin Rover from 1982.

The border’s reopening in 1985 sparks a strong recovery in retail and vehicle sales.

1990s

Strategic Realignment

1994 – John A.S. Capurro takes full ownership of The Capurro Group, including A.M. Capurro, Gedime Motors, and Capurro Insurance.

By 1996, the company refocuses on core areas, closing non-essential businesses (furniture, electronics, travel) as the fourth generation steps into leadership.

2000s

Modernisation & Finance

In 2000, Gedime Motors expends its business with the opening of a state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz facility on Devil’s Tower Road.

AMC Credit is launched in 2007, becoming one of Gibraltar’s leading finance and leasing companies.

2010s-2020s

Growth & Diversification

A major refurbishment of the main facility begins in 2016, introducing new Jaguar Land Rover showrooms and service areas.

In 2019, AMC and Jaguar Land Rover launch a global Diplomatic Sales programme, which grows into a 30-person team.

The group continues to expand in 2022, adding new automotive brands and launching Capurro Properties to develop a long-term real estate portfolio.
